How we work

Our joined-up approach to public health means we can be the link between local and national stakeholders

Partnership working

At HEG, we believe improving public health and tackling health inequalities requires collaboration. Our work is deeply interconnected with a range of partners including local authority public health teams, NHS trusts and charities, each playing a vital role in the system to improve population health and wellbeing.

By involving a wide range of people and professionals, including lived experience, in the design of all our projects, we can ensure that we deliver in an inclusive and equitable way.

Through our collaborative approach, we can amplify our impact, drive meaningful change, reducing health inequalities and supporting the health and happiness of our communities.

Breaking silos

Local authority public health teams are often at the forefront of efforts to improve public health alongside colleague in the NHS as they understand their communities’ unique health challenges. But to tackle widening health inequalities and move to a more preventative model, we need to engage with wider system partners.

We have thousands of colleagues nationally who may not be public health specialists or practitioners but have the opportunity or ability to improve public health. Colleagues working in the Voluntary, Charitable, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector, the welfare and housing professions, and emergency services, sports and leisure, town planning and transportation, and social care staff can all make a difference through their existing expertise and networks.

HEG is starting to break these silos, helping to join the dots across the system, and address the wider determinants of health.

In-house expertise

At HEG, we bring a diverse range of expertise drawn from our extensive work in public health, policy development, research and community engagement.

  • Comprehensive understanding of health inequalities: We have a deep knowledge of the health landscape, from government policy to the specific challenges faced by communities and frontline services.
  • Policy, leadership and delivery expertise: Our team comprises experts in health policy, systems leadership, and project delivery allowing us to impact both the upstream causes of ill health and downstream consequences.
  • Strategic relationships and consensus building: We maintain strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders so when we need to build consensus on shared challenges., we can bring the best partners to the table.
  • Communications and advocacy: Our team can create compelling, narratives to help you communicate about the health issues impacting your community in ways that will create meaningful change at local level and influence national policy.

Upstream action, downstream intervention

If one person fell into a river, you might be able to help them. But if another fell in, then another – and another – you’d be so busy trying to save everyone, you may not notice what’s causing them to fall in in the first place. The same can be true of our health systems; by focusing on treatment rather than prevention, we can lose sight of what’s actually causing ill health.

At HEG, we help our partners to consider how to improve the building blocks of good health in our society, such as warm homes, efficient public transport, quality education and access to healthier food. For those who do unfortunately fall in, we can help design effective interventions that can help people stay afloat in difficult waters.
