Professor Simon Capewell

I qualified from Newcastle University and trained in both clinical medicine and public health before being appointed as the first Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Liverpool in 1999. In 2022, I became Professor Emeritus. My research has focused on the epidemiology and prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease, diabetes, and common cancers. Much of my work addresses the key drivers of NCDs, such as inequalities, tobacco use, alcohol, physical inactivity, and poor diet. I continue to mentor colleagues, support multidisciplinary research teams, and edit scientific papers. With expertise spanning policy, population health, health services, and clinical prevention, I am considered a public health generalist.

I have been passionately committed to promoting policies that prevent non-communicable diseases and reduce inequalities. Having been involved with Health Equalities Group since its inception as "Heart of Mersey" in 2003, I am proud to serve as Chair and support their vital mission.

Outside of work, I enjoy gardening and spending time with my grandchildren. Additionally, I have contributed to policy development, service work, advocacy, and media work on local, national, and international levels.
