Warrington Borough Council has taken a significant step toward improving the health and wellbeing of its residents by adopting the Healthy Weight Declaration, with support from six local partners who have signed the Healthy Weight Declaration Partner Pledge. This initiative was launched on July 12th alongside two new key strategies: Move More, More Often and Eat Well, Feel Well. Both strategies aim to make it easier for people across Warrington to lead healthier, more active lives over the next three years.
The Move More, More Often strategy, led by Active Warrington, focuses on making physical activity a regular part of everyday life for all residents. With data showing that half of Warrington’s children and 30% of its adults do not meet UK physical activity guidelines, the strategy seeks to address these challenges. It emphasises creating more opportunities for physical activity across communities, healthcare settings, schools, and workplaces, while also encouraging broader participation in sports and active recreation.
Meanwhile, the Eat Well, Feel Well strategy targets the need for healthier, more accessible food options, particularly in tackling health inequalities. It includes initiatives such as food-growing schemes, increasing access to fresh drinking water, and providing healthier food options in schools, workplaces, and community venues. The strategy also involves collaboration with local food businesses to promote healthier choices and limit the marketing of unhealthy food to children.
Both strategies are underpinned by a shared commitment to reducing health disparities across Warrington. This includes improving access to affordable, nutritious food and creating environments that support more active lifestyles. Initiatives such as developing cycle lanes, enhancing outdoor spaces, and working with local stakeholders will play a key role in making these changes a reality.
